Demo: Steaming Through
Materials:
Schmincke Horadam Gouache: Lemon Yellow, Indian Yellow, Cadmium Orange, Quinacridone Violet, Carmine, Burnt sienna, Cobalt blue light, Ultramarine deep, Violet.
Paper: Saunders Waterford Hi White 200 lb NOT.
Brushes: Da Vinci Maestro No 6 and Cosmatop No 6.
2B pencil.
Glass palette.
Spray diffuser bottle.
Stage 1:
This has been painted with no preliminary pencil drawing, rather going straight in with brush and gouache paint.
Stage 2:
With diluted Indian yellow I add this to the blue/brown of the billowing smoke.
Stage 3:
For the foreground I flicked in some blue/yellow then went into the steam around the wheels with a dilute grey mix.
Stage 4:
I start to work up into the main area of smoke using the Indian yellow, burnt sienna, cobalt blue and a touch of violet.
Stage 5:
I finish off by adding just a few light and dark accents here and there but not overdoing it... it is a sketch after all! I find doing these small sketches extremely satisfying as its great to throw caution to the wind and painting just for the fun of it.
